How an electric cargo bike is built – inside the production process

News

A cargo bike may look simple from the outside. But behind every finished bike there are many manual steps, checks and tests before it leaves the factory. For anyone considering buying an e-bike or an electric cargo bike, these details can make a real difference in everyday use.

This overview is based on information directly from the production process where Ecoride cargo bikes are assembled and tested before delivery.

Each cargo bike is assembled by hand

Every electric cargo bike is built and assembled individually. It is not a fully automated process where bikes roll off a production line ready to ride.

Technicians assemble each bike step by step:

  • the frame is prepared

  • the drivetrain and motor are installed

  • the battery and display are mounted

  • the braking system is adjusted

  • all moving parts are lubricated

When the assembly is complete, the pedals are installed as well. The bike is therefore delivered ready to ride.

Front wheel synchronization for stable handling

On many cargo bikes the steering system is more complex than on a standard bicycle. This is especially true for three-wheel models.

A key part of the assembly process is precise synchronization of the front wheels. If they are not correctly aligned, the bike may feel unstable or pull to one side.

This adjustment is carried out manually during production to ensure stable handling even when the electric cargo bike is fully loaded.

The braking system is bled separately

An electric cargo bike weighs more than a typical e-bike and is often used to transport children or goods. Because of that, braking performance is particularly important.

During production the braking system goes through a dedicated process where:

  • the brakes are bled

  • brake pressure is checked

  • the braking function is tested

This helps ensure reliable braking performance from the first ride.

Lubrication and protection against corrosion

Small details often determine how long a bike lasts. During assembly grease is applied to several parts, including:

  • adjustment screws

  • moving components

  • parts that may be exposed to corrosion

This makes later adjustments easier and helps components last longer over time.

New components before delivery

Each completed electric cargo bike is delivered with:

  • a new battery

  • a new display

  • new reflectors (on certain models)

These components are not reused from test bikes or previous production.

Test ride before the bike leaves the factory

Before an e-bike or electric cargo bike is shipped, it goes through a final inspection.

Each bike:

  • undergoes a mechanical check

  • is visually inspected

  • is tested during a ride

The test ride confirms that gears, brakes and steering work correctly under real riding conditions.

Development of the production process

The production line for Ecoride cargo bikes is continuously being improved. During 2026, further updates will be made to the Loader production setup with the goal of improving both assembly and quality control.

Why the production process matters

When comparing different electric cargo bike models, most people focus on the motor, battery and range. But how the bike is actually built can matter just as much.

Small details in assembly, brake adjustment and testing can determine how stable and reliable a cargo bike feels after years of use.
