How do you charge your Ecoride electric bike correctly?

Guides

When you buy an electric bike from us at Ecoride, we want it to be easy to use in everyday life. Charging is a big part of that. If you do it right from the start, the battery lasts longer, performs better, and gives you fewer issues over time.

Here we explain how to charge your electric bike, as well as what to keep in mind, common mistakes, and how to take care of the battery in the long run.

How charging works on our electric bikes

All our electric bikes use modern lithium batteries. They are efficient, reliable, and built for daily use, but like all batteries, they last longer when used correctly.

You can charge the battery in two ways

You can choose the option that suits your daily routine best:

  • Charge the battery directly on the electric bike

  • Remove the battery and charge it separately

Both methods work just as well. Many riders prefer to remove the battery and charge it indoors, especially during autumn and winter. That is perfectly fine and often a very good idea.

Step by step: how to charge your electric bike

1. Turn off the battery

Before you start charging, make sure the battery is switched off. This reduces wear and makes charging safer.

2. Connect the charger in the correct order

We always recommend the same order:

  1. Connect the charger to the battery, or to the bike if the battery is mounted

  2. Then plug the charger into the wall outlet

When charging is complete, disconnect in reverse order:
first unplug the charger from the wall outlet, then from the battery.

3. Wait until charging is complete

Most chargers have a clear indicator light:

  • Red light means the battery is charging

  • Green light means the battery is fully charged

When the light turns green, the battery is ready to use.

How long does it take to charge an electric bike?

In most cases, a full charge takes around 3 to 5 hours.
The charging time depends on:

  • Battery capacity

  • How discharged the battery is

  • Ambient temperature

If the battery is not fully empty, charging will be faster.

When should you charge the battery?

Charge more often rather than letting it fully drain

Lithium batteries perform best when they are not completely drained every time. We recommend charging the battery when the level starts to get low, not only when it is fully empty.

This results in:

  • Longer battery lifespan

  • More consistent performance

  • Reduced risk of issues

Do you need to charge to 100 percent every time?

No. It is perfectly fine to charge to around 80 or 90 percent if you know you do not need full range. For daily commuting, this can even be better in the long term.

Tips for longer battery lifespan

Here are some simple but important tips that make a big difference over time.

Avoid extreme cold and heat while charging
  • Charge at room temperature whenever possible

  • Avoid charging in freezing conditions

  • Do not charge in direct sunlight on very hot days

If you ride during winter, bring the battery indoors and let it reach room temperature before charging.

Store the battery correctly when the bike is not in use

If you are not going to use your electric bike for a while:

  • Charge the battery to about 60 to 70 percent

  • Store it in a dry, cool indoor environment

  • Avoid leaving the battery completely discharged

This is one of the most important things you can do to extend battery life.

Always use the original charger

Only use the charger that came with your electric bike from us. Other chargers may have incorrect voltage or output and can damage the battery, even if the connector fits.

Common questions about charging

Can I charge the battery overnight?

Technically yes, the battery stops charging once it is full.
However, for the best possible battery lifespan, we do not recommend making this a habit. Charge the battery when you are awake and able to keep some supervision.

Should the electric bike be turned on while charging?

No. The electric bike should be turned off during charging.

Can I charge the battery in the rain?

The battery and charging port are protected, but we always recommend charging in dry environments. Moisture and rain are not good for batteries over time.
